Unlike dogs, which are predators much like ourselves, horses are 1000 lb vegetarians that have been designed to escape from danger at lightning speed. Even though they’re 4-footed mammals, as a herd animal, they behave more like a school of fish than like a pack of wolves. I try to remember this whenever I’m trying to have a discussion with my mare. It explains why running away fast always seems to be the best option.
